- January 1 - Giuseppe Piazzi discovers the first (and largest) asteroid Ceres, which is briefly hailed as the 8th planet.1
- Dalton's law: John Dalton observes that the total pressure exerted by a gaseous mixture is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of each individual component in a gas mixture.
Astronomy
- Ceres, largest of all asteroids is discovered by the Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi (1746-1826), and is briefly considered to be a planet.
Physics
- In optics, interference between light beams is discovered by Thomas Young (1773-1829), showing the wave nature of light.
Chemistry
- In chemistry, niobium is discovered in ore called columbite by Charles Hatchett who names it "columbium" (renamed "niobium" in 1950).
- In chemistry, vanadium, a transition metal, is discovered by Andrés Manuel del Río in Mexico.
Technology
- Joseph-Marie Jacquard develops the Jacquard Loom, in which holes strategically punched in a pasteboard card directed the movement of needles, thread, and fabric.
- The xaenorphica, a bow-stringed instrument with a keyboard, is invented in by C. L. Röllig of Vienna (the strings were set in vibration by violin bows.).
