In astrology, a cusp (from the Latin for spear or point) is the imaginary line that separates a sign in the zodiac or a house in the horoscope.

Because the solar disc has a diameter of approximately half a degree, it is possible for the sun to straddle the cusp as it moves across the sky. When this occurs at the moment of birth such a person is said to be "born on the cusp" and some believe that their life is influenced by the characteristics of both signs. For example, if an individual was born when the Sun (meaning the point at the centre of the solar disc) was located at 29 degrees, 50 minutes Gemini, then he might say that he was born on the cusp of Gemini and Cancer.

The belief that a person must be born within 1/2 a degree of the cusp to be influenced by the receding sign does not have universal agreement among astrologers. All astrologers agree that as the sun moves further away from the cusp, the influence of receding sun sign decreases. The disagreement concerns how far away the sun must be from the cusp before the influence of the receding sun sign disappears. Some astrologers hold that even when the sun is as far away as two degrees some influence of the receding sign is felt and thus such a person should be labeled as being "born on the cusp".

The concept of the cusp is sometimes also extended to a general belief in fuzziness of sign boundaries, so that even much smaller objects near a cusp may be described as taking on some of the features of the adjacent sign. The degrees between the cusps are 1/2 degree to 2 degrees.
