- In genetics, an Enhancer (genetics) is a short region of DNA that can bind proteins called an activator (genetics), binding of activators to this enhancer region can initiate the transcription of a gene that may be some distance away from the enhancer, or can even be on a different chromosome. The increase in transcription is due to the activators recruiting transcription factors, which enhances the binding of RNA polymerase.
