Career
The group Hot Chocolate was produced by Mickie Most and recorded on his RAK Records label. Brown went solo in the 1980s, and achieved success in the clubs with his 1987 single and twelve inch "Body Rockin'", produced by Richard James Burgess.
Brown owned some National Hunt horses including Gainsay who won valuable races at the 1987 Cheltenham Festival and Grand National meetings.2
The 1990s saw Brown slip into the background, driving around South West London in his Porsche (licence plate 'HC3' – "The owner of HC1 wouldn't sell it," he said), and spending his time in the bridge clubs of Esher, while his teenage daughters went to school at the Guildhall School of Music, and Lady Eleanor Holles School in Hampton, London. It was the use of the Hot Chocolate single, "You Sexy Thing" in the 1997 film, The Full Monty, that brought Brown out of retirement.
In 2003 Brown was appointed an MBE for services to popular music.1 In 2004 he received an Ivor Novello Award for outstanding contributions to British music. Brown now lives in The Bahamas with his wife of over 30 years, Ginette (formerly Marie).
His mother Dillys' maiden name was Downey, and she was from the town of Port Talbot in Wales. Brown still has relations in the area and frequently visits.
