School's Description

"Our aim is to create a friendly and supportive but orderly school, ambitious and challenging, in which students can develop self-reliance and a desire to fulfil their potential in all areas, academic, personal, social, sporting, the arts and community involvement. Because of our 13-18 age range we try to foster an adult atmosphere based on mutual respect and co-operation. Our behaviour policy emphasises the positive and visitors often compliment us on the atmosphere in the school. A very positive OFSTED report in April 2001 confirmed that 'Students in the school learn well as a result of consistently good teaching' and 'The school fosters good relationships, which helps students adopt positive attitudes and behave well'."

Academic

Academic organisation is by faculties and subject departments. Students in Year 9 take a common course consisting of

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • French
  • Art
  • Design
  • History
  • Geography
  • Religious Education
  • Music
  • Drama
  • Physical Education
  • Personal and Social Education).

Spanish as a second language is also begun at this stage. Each subject area groups students in the way it deems most appropriate. Children who require extra help are withdrawn for some lessons. In Years 10/11 students follow two year courses in English, Mathematics, Balanced Science, Modern Languages, PSME, PE, half courses in Design Technology and Information Technology and optional subjects chosen from a wide range on offer, including pre-vocational and GNVQ Part 1 Courses. The school day is of 6 x 50 minute periods, 4 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon.

The school offers 21 A-Level courses plus GNVQ and AVCE Business and Leisure & Tourism, Intermediate and Advanced Level.

Pastoral and Extra Curricular

Pastoral and social organisation is by mixed ability tutor groups within Year Groups; Heads of Year have substantial responsibility for Years 9, 10, 11 and 12/13 respectively. In addition to their subject teaching commitments all form tutors teach their own form for one period per week as part of a planned programme of personal and social education, careers etc.

The school has a great tradition of athletic and sporting success. Drama is very strong in the school, both in the high quality of productions and the excellence of results. Music is also flourishing with a woodwind ensemble, windband and large choir. There are exchange links with France and Spain. Parties regularly travel abroad for study visits, along with skiing, hockey and soccer trips.

Examination Results

The School's results in KS3 Tests are well above national averages. Over the past 5 years examination results at GCSE have risen steadily to match national averages. In 2002 45% of students obtained 5 or more A*-C grades, 92% 5 or more A*-G grades and 99% 1 or more A*-G grades. The School's Sixth Form continues to expand steadily and over the past 3 years we have averaged a pass rate of over 90% at A-Level and an average points score of 15.7. The School is very enthusiastic about tests.
