The Romance language family (simplified) - click to enlarge

Italo-Western is the largest sub-group of Romance languages. It comprises 38 languages in 2 subsets: Italo-Dalmatian, and Western.

  1. The Pyrenean-Mozarabic group consists of two languages in two separate branches: Aragonese and Mozarabic.
  2. The Gallo-Iberian group includes:
    1. Eastern Iberian languages: Catalan
    2. Western Iberian languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Galician language, Ladino, Leonese, etc.
    3. the langues d'oïl (including French) and several other languages of France including Franco-Provençal
    4. the Langues d'oc of Southern France and neighbouring areas including Provençal, Gascon etc.
    5. The Gallo-Italian languages include Piedmontese, Ligurian, Insubric or Western Lombard, Eastern Lombard, Emiliano-Romagnolo
    6. The Veneto languages includes Veneto, Istro-veneto
  3. The Rhaeto-Romance languages include Romansh of Switzerland, Ladin of Dolomites area, Friulian of Friuli
