Lelant is a village in Cornwall, England, UK situated between the nearby towns of Hayle and St Ives.
The name is derived from the Cornish lann and Anta, meaning Church-site of Anta,[1] earliest attested spelling Lananta, about year 1170.[2][3] Nothing is known about Anta and the church is dedicated to St Uny. Carbis Bay church is also dedicated to St Anta.
History
St. Uny's Church, Lelant is the parish church. Lelant was a seaport in the Middle Ages, but the trade was lost to St Ives when the estuary silted up. At Lower Lelant is a house called The Abbey which was built in the 16th century and renovated in the 18th.[4]
Langdon (1896) records nine stone crosses in the parish, of which four are in the churchyard.
The family of Praed were landowners here for many centuries.
Transport and customs
The village is served by two railway stations: Lelant, which serves the village, and Lelant Saltings, which serves a park and ride site nearby. Both are on the St. Ives - St. Erth branch line.
For Christmas, residents display simple white lights giving the main road a pleasant, welcoming appearance.
