This is a list of United States state insects; note that some states have more than one designated insect, or have multiple categories (e.g., "state insect" plus "state butterfly", etc.), and nine states (out of 50) have no official state insect as of 2008. Note also that over half of the insects chosen are not native to North America, due to the inclusion of three European species (European honey bee, European mantis, and 7-spotted ladybug):
