History
The Tareen played a key role in Sultan Muhammad Ghori's army and showed great bravery. The Tareen tribes of Hazara migrated from Kandahar as well as the Pishin District of Balochistan in the 17th century CE under the leadership of Sher Khan Tareen.
During his conquest of India, Ahmed Shah Abdali deputed powerful tribal chiefs with conquered areas. In the Hazara region, among the deputed chiefs were Najeebullah Khan Tareen, Sa'adat Khan Swati of Garhi Habibullah, and Mir Zabardast Khan Tanoli (also known as Suba Khan Tanoli). Tareens have some history with other Pashtun tribes in the Hazara region, uniting against Sikhs during the period of Sikh rule. People like Sardar Muhammad Khan Tareen and Sardar Bostan Khan Tareen staunchly resisted the Sikh empire and are now revered as heroes of Hazara history. The leading men among the Tor Tareen in Pishin (1905) were Khan Sahib Iskan Khan Noorzai, Khan Bahadur Khan Batezai, Malik Marsala Khudaidadzai, Malik Shakoor Khudaidadzai , Malik Baz Heikalzai and Malik Muhamad Noor Tareen Alizai.
Branches of the Tareen Tribe
The famous Khels and subsections of the Tareen tribe are
- Toor
- Spin
- Bor or Abdaal
- Zharh
Toor Tareen
Toor Tareen is credited by local tradition as having had a son, Babo, who in turn had two son Ali (Alizai) and Haroon or Harun (Haroonzai) or (Harunzai). The descendants of Ali are known as the Alizai, while those of Haroon or Harun are divided into the following principal sections:
Raisani is a Tareen (Toor Tareen) tribe in Balochistan, Pakistan. The Raisani are an influential tribe among the Tareen tribes, their Chief being the head of the Sarawan division of the Tareen confederacy. Tipu Sultan was an emperor of the Toor Tareen tribe. Nowadays the Raisani tribe is wrongly known as a Brahui tribe. The leader of each tribe is called Sardar. The Raisani tribal chief is called the Chief of Sarawan. The present Chief of Sarawan and Nawab of the Raisani Tribe is Nawab Aslam Khan Raisani, son of the late Nawab Mir Ghaus Baksh Khan Raisani, Chief of Sarawan (Shaheed). The other prominent son of Nawab Ghaus Baksh Raisani is Nawabzada Lashkari Raisani, Senator and President of PPP Balochistan.
The principal sections into which the tribe is divided are the Sirajzai, Rustamzai, Sahizai, Ráhusainzai, Isiáni, Mehráni and Pandráni. The Sardar Khéls live at Mithri in Kachi.
Bor Tareen or Abdaal Tareen
The founder of the Durrani dynasty, Ahmad Shah Abdali, originated from the Abdali or Bor Tareen tribe but changed the name later to Durrani. The current President of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, is Popalzai from Kandahar. The Sadduzai are a lineage of the Popalzai clan of the Abdali sub-tribe of the Tareen - Abdal Tareen tribe of Pashtuns. Most of the notable Afghan kings and rulers belong to Sadduzai and Barakzai clans.
The term Abdal, however, gradually superseded that of Bor Tareen and came into special prominence when Ahmad Shah Abdali, commonly known as Durrani, began his career of conquest. The Achakzais are, strictly speaking, a branch of the Barakzai but Ahmad Shah, himself an Abdal Tareen, fearing the growing numbers of the Barakzai, separated them from the parent stock, since which time their organization has remained distinct. It is still used, though sparingly, for the Achakzais, who have become localised in Toba and are regarded as a separate political unit from the rest of the Tareens. According to Hyat Khan's history of Afghanistan, from their progenitor Bor Tareen, otherwise known as Abdal, are descended two main divisions: the Zirak and the Panjpai.
- Zirak
- Panjpai
In Balochistan the major subtribes of Tor Tareen are the Khudaidadzai (the Aghakhel or Pirkhana of Tareen Tribes) and the Noorzai or Nurzai (the Sardars or Khans of the Tareen tribes). The subtribes of the Haroonzai tribe in Pishin are: Haroonzai, Alizai, Noorzai, Khudaidadzai, Saimzai, Lalazai, Millizai, Shadizai, Mohammadzai, Batezai, Heikalzai, Sheikhalzai, Kamalzai, Khanzai, Omerzai, Habibzai, Sopanzai, Sakhizai, Balozai, Segi, Raisani, Wazir, Jam, Sulaiman, Omchai. Abdaal Tareen, or Abdali, is now a separate tribe, and usually goes by the name Durrani.
The Durrani confederacy, no longer considered part of the Tareen tribe, is one of the two most powerful tribal confederacies in Afghanistan. The other is led by the Ghilzai tribe. Tareens were from southern Afghanistan, then they migrated to India. They are now mostly in Pakistan, Europe, Afghanistan, Canada, America. The Tareens were later passed onto Muslims as last names and first names. That is the history of the Tareens.
The Tareen tribes are Sardars, Khans and Maliks (Chiefs). The Sardars or Khans of the Toor Tareen tribe are settled in Distt Pishin Balochistan, named Sardaran or Khanaan Family of Torashah village; they are the Haroonzai - Noorzai sub-tribe of Toor Tareen. The Sardars of Spin Tareen are settled in Distt Loralai Tehsil Dukki and Harnai Distt.
Tareen residence
The origins of the Tareen tribe are in Tareen Kowt in the Orūzgān Province of Afghanistan and Pishin near Quetta in Pakistan's Balochistan Province. This area was formerly a part of Afghanistan but was ceded to the British after the Second Afghan War. Some families migrated to Haripur in Hazara Division in the present North West Frontier Province of Pakistan (then part of British India). The Tareens have a sizeable presence in Multan since the times of Ahmad Shah Abdali Durrani.
They now live in Afghanistan, Kandahar, Helmand, Oruzgan, Tareen Kowt, Pishin, Mastung, Gulistan, Quetta, Ziarat, Loralai, Harnai, Sharaga, Khost, Sanjavi, Dukki, Bolan, Sibi, Gandava, Qallat, Usta Mohammad (District Jafferabad), Multan, Rahim Yar Khan, Lodarahan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Attock, Chhachh, Peshawar, Haripur, Abbotabbad (Hazara Division) and in Sindh.
One Abdul Karim Khan Tareen migrated from Multan to Istanbul (then capital of erstwhile Ottoman Turkey) in the mid-nineteenth century and his descendants are living in Turkey, but they do not use the surname "Tareen"; instead they use the name "Bey".[1] A considerable population of Tareen Pashtuns settled down in India and adopted Urdu/Hindi as their first language.
For the most part, Toor Tareens are settled in Quetta, Pishin, Saigi (Gulistan), Ziarat, Haripur, Multan, Kandahar, Helmand, Orzgun - Tarin Kowt Afghanistan, etc. Spin Tareens are settled in Quetta, Loralai, Harnai, Dukki, Sinjavi, etc. The Zharh Tareens are mainly settled in Mastung. Bor or Abdal Tareens are settled in Afghanistan in Kandahar, Helmand, Farah and in Pakistan in Qilla Abdullah Khan, Pishin, and Quetta.
Languages
The principal language of Tareens is Pashto. Formerly, Persian was used as the language for records and correspondence; until the late nineteenth century tombstones were also inscribed in Persian. The language of the Tareen tribes in Pishin, Quetta, Gulistan and Dukki (Distt. Loralai) is just like the language spoken in Kandahar. Those who have settled away from Pishin speak local languages (Pushto), such as Multani or Sraiki in Multan, Hindko in Hazara, Urdu in Bhopal and Sindhi in Sind. Tareeno, a dialect of Pashto, is the language spoken by Harnai Tareens.

Very soon people saw roads, train and Schools in the area. However the Britishers made a historic treachery by naming the Pashtun area as British Balochistan. (Word Balochistan was used for the first time in History). In April 1883 it was combined with Pishin into a single administrative unit. In 1975, Quetta and Pishin were made separate districts. Ahmad Shāh Durrānī (c.1723–1773) (احمد شاه دراني), also known as Ahmad Shāh Abdālī and he is tribe of Bor or Abdal Tareen and subtribe of Tareen and later he change his name from Bor or Abdali Tareen to Durrani and born as Ahmad Khān Abdālī, was the founder of the Durrani Empire and is regarded by many to be the founder of modern Afghanistan.[2][3] After the assassination of Nader Shah Afshar, he became the Amir of Khorasan[4][5] and later became the founder and ruler of his own Empire. The Pashtuns of Afghanistan often call him Bābā ("father"). Ahmad Khan (later Ahmad Shah) was born in Multan, Punjab, in what is now Pakistan. He was from the Sadozai section of the Popalzai clan of the Abdali Pashtuns, and he was the second son of Mohammed Zaman Khan, chief of the Abdalis. In his youth, Ahmad Shah and his elder brother, Zulfikar Khan, were imprisoned inside a fortress by Hussein Khan, the Ghilzai governor of Kandahar. Hussein Khan commanded a powerful tribe of Pashtuns, having conquered the eastern part of Persia a few years previously and trodden the throne of the Safavids. In around 1731, Nader Shah Afshar, the new ruler of Persia, began enlisting the Abdalis in his army. After conquering Kandahar in 1737, Ahmad Khan and his brother were freed by the new Persian ruler. The Ghilzai were expelled from Kandahar and the Abdalis were allowed to settle there instead.
Muhammad Khan Tareen Shaheed
Pakistan's first native Army Chief and also the first military dictator of that country, Field Marshall Muhammad Ayub Khan belonged to a Tareen family whose members have always left behind their mark on battlefields. Three such members of Muhammad Ayub Khan’s family stand up at this occasion; Muhammad Khan Tareen, Bostan Khan Tareen and Ghulam Khan Tareen. These were the ones who attained martyrdom but never even gave a second thought of bowing their heads before the enemy. Ayub Khan's image as a strong General, however, was a bit affected after the Indo-Pakistan war in 1965.
General Ayub Khan Batezai Tareen
Muhammad Ayub Khan (Urdu/Pashto: محمد ايوب خان) HJ, NPk (May 14, 1907 - April 19, 1974) was born in Rehana, Haripur. He were the tribe of Toor Tareen, Batezai (Pishin). Their family is migrated from Qilla Batezai Pishin, Balochistan to Haripur. Muhammad Ayub Khan Tareen is one of the most famous members of the Tareen. He fought in Burma during WWII and was a Field Marshal during the mid-1960s, and the political leader of Pakistan from 1958 to 1969. He became Pakistan's first native Commander in Chief in 1951, and was the youngest full-rank general and self-appointed field marshal in Pakistan's military history. He was also the first Pakistani military general to seize power through a coup.
He would later go on to serve in the second cabinet (1954) of Muhammad Ali Bogra as Defence Minister, and when Iskander Mirza declared martial law on October 7, 1958, Ayub Khan was made its chief martial law administrator. This would be the first of many instances in the history of Pakistan of the military becoming directly involved in politics.
Sardar Bashir Khan Noorzai Tareen
Sardar Bashir Ahmad Khan Tareen was born at Pishin in Balochistan in 1938 in the Sardar home. His sub tribe is Haroonzai - Noorzai of Toor Tareen and migrated from Killi Torashah to Pishin Bazar. He is the son of Sardar Nazar Muhammad Khan Tareen, youngest brother of Sardar Khair Mohmmad Khan Tareen and brother of Sardar Naseer Khan Tareen and uncle of Sardar Mustafa Khan Tareen and relative of Khan Wasay Khan Tareen Adv. He received his early education at the local High School and opted for agriculture and maintenance of the family lands and property. He is Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Water and Power and is also represented in Senate Committees on Local Government and Rural Development and Works and Environment and Urban Affairs.
Sardar Naseer Khan Noorzai Tareen
Sardar Naseer Khan Tareen was born in district Pishin in Sardar home. His sub-tribe is Haroonzai - Noorzai of Toor Tareen and migrated from Killi Torashah to Pishin Bazar. He is the son of Sardar Nazar Muhammad Khan Tareen, youngest brother of Sardar Khair Mohmmad Khan Tareen and brother of Sardar Bashir Khan Tareen and uncle of Sardar Mustafa Khan Tareen and relative of Khan Wasay Khan Tareen Adv. Sardar Naseer Khan Tareen, a US trained professional film-maker discovered this when he was commissioned by the Government of Balochistan to make a film on the allegedly rich wildlife of the province in 1984. During the filming, Sardar Naseer came across a pocket of some of the last remaining populations of Suleiman Markhor and Afghan Urial in Torghar. When Sardar Naseer realised that nothing was being done by either the government or the local tribesmen to save these wild ungulates from extinction, he took the difficult task upon himself, turning into a self confessed accidental environmentalist.
At the time, his father was the Sardar (or chieftain) of the Tareen tribe, as is his nephew today (although the actual power passes traditionally from father to eldest son in Balochistan, all the sons can use the title of Sardar).
Sardar Naseer’s ancestral home is an old fort located about 30 kilometres north of Pishin, and is still inhabited by members of his extended family. Sardar Naseer comes from Balochistan, from a town called Pishin near Quetta. In his early 60s, he is a tireless traveler and a cultured man. He has all the sophistication of a globe-trotter who is equally at home in both the east and the west. He remains a bachelor to this day, saying “This is why I have all the time in the world for my work.” Sardar Naseer received his initial schooling in Pishin, later moving to Quetta and Lahore for his higher education. He attended Lahore’s prestigious Government College from 1953 to 1958 before leaving for the USA. “I was going to study International Relations… but instead I switched to communication and got admitted to the California Institute of Arts,” he says with a wide smile. In the 1960s, CalArts was a highly selective institution, only those who showed promise of outstanding talent were granted admission. While Sardar Naseer thoroughly enjoyed his studies in Cinema-Graphic, back in Balochistan his conservative family got upset over their son’s unconventional decision to pursue the arts. He nevertheless completed his training and decided to stay on in the USA.
