The Chase, also known as The Chase Technology College and The Chase High School, is a secondary school (ages 11-18) in Malvern, Worcestershire, England. It was opened by Viscount Cobham on 26 March 1955. It is one of the largest schools in Worcestershire, having over 1,700 on roll and around 200 staff members. The location is on a flat site close to a large technology company, QinetiQ, and the Malvern Hills Science Park.

Background

The Chase has been a specialist schools programme Technology College since 1999, and was awarded Beacon school status in 2002.3 The school achieved Artsmark Gold status in 2001 for excellent in art and design, drama, music, creative writing and public speaking. The Chase is also a Language College (French, German, Spanish and Japanese). The school has Sportsmark Gold status, this is awarded to schools by Sport England for the excellent in provision of Physical Education and school sport.

It is administered by the Worcestershire County Directorate of Educational Services, and Brian O'Connell is the head of governors. Current headmaster Kevin Peck replaced David Fawbert in 2002, who had been awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to education during his tenure. There are 16 primary schools in Malvern that feed The Chase and nearby Dyson Perrins CE Sports College. The average A level results in 2005 were AAB.

The school underwent a two day OFSTED inspection which started on 22 February 2006, and was described as "good with some outstanding features".2

Library

The Chase Library opened in September 2006 and was officially opened on 23rd. February, 2007, by the poet Carol Ann Duffy. The Library is situated adjacent to the main ground floor block.

  • Fiction: Books are arranged in alphabetical order, according to genre.
  • Non-fiction: Books are catalogued by the Dewey Decimal System.

The Chase Library is open from 8.30 am – 5.00 pm on Monday to Thursday and from 8.30 am – 4.30 pm on a Friday. Pupils may use the Library independently from 8.30 am – 8.45 am and during both morning break and lunch break. Year Groups may visit the Library at these times on the following days:

  • Monday: Year 7
  • Tuesday: Year 8
  • Wednesday: Year 9
  • Thursday: Year 10
  • Friday: Year 11

Uniform

The Chase school uniform consists of, for boys: a blue sweater, with the Chase emblem on the left breast a white or blue shirt, a blue and gold, diagonally striped tie and and greay or black trousers. For girls, the uniform consists of: a blue sweater, with the Chase emblem on the left breast a white or blue shirt, a blue and gold, diagonally striped tie, black, blue or natural tights (unpatterned), and a blue skirt.

Traditions

  • The students of The Chase take part in the annual "Hills Walk" - A 7.5 mile walk accross the Malvern Hills and the surrounding area. The walk begins and the clock tower in West Malvern, at the foot of the Malvern Hills, and finishes at the school campus on Geraldine Road, Malvern. The walk has teken place every year since 1955, apart from in 2007, when it deemed to be too hot, and the walk was cancelled.
  • It is traditional for a Senior Student Team to be selected from students of the Upper-Sixth. One Head Boy and one Head Girl, and a number of Deputies. The number of Deputies is not fixed. This position is simply awarded to any capable and deserving student. The record number is the academic year of 2008/2009, where ten deputies are active. There is also one stand-in deputy who, although not counted as an official member of the Senior Team, has appeared in some photographs and carried out some responsibilities of the Senior Students.
