Uncle Sam
Contrary to popular belief at one time, "U.S." does not refer to the man "Uncle Sam" (Wilson) of Troy, NY. The U.S. stamp on barrels of meat once attributed to his name actually refers to the United States. This is speculated to be the origin of the national personification of the United States, which is "Uncle Sam".

- us is often used to denote µs (microsecond) when the proper "µ" (micro sign) character or Greek "μ" (Mu) letter are both missing or cannot be easily entered
- U/S meaning un-servicable. This has been a common abbreviation in the UK and other nations, deriving its use from military usage. Typical usage would be to mark a vehicle in chalk on a side door with 'U/S' to denote that the vehicle is un-roadworthy. Other equipment would be similarly marked.
