Vintage Books was founded in 1954 by Alfred A. Knopf as a trade paperback home for its authors. Its publishing list includes works of world literature, contemporary American fiction, and non-fiction. Authors who have published with Vintage include A. S. Byatt, Albert Camus, Angela Carter, Raymond Chandler, Bret Easton Ellis, Ralph Ellison, William Faulkner, Richard Yates, Richard Ford, David Guterson, Cormac McCarthy, Alice Munro, Haruki Murakami, Vladimir Nabokov, V. S. Naipaul, Chuck Palahniuk, Philip Roth, Richard Russo, William Styron, and Andrew Vachss. Vintage is one of the most active publishers of trade paperbacks.
It is a subdivision of Random House publishing, which is in turn owned by Bertelsmann, a German media conglomerate.
In 1990 Vintage was set up in the United Kingdom. This imprint works independently from the American imprint although both are part of Random House.
Vintage in the United Kingdom was initially created to publish paperback editions of books acquired by the prestigious hardback imprints of Random House UK such as Jonathan Cape, Chatto & Windus, Hutchinson and later William Heinemann, Secker & Warburg and The Harvill Press. There are many Booker Prize and Nobel Prize-winning authors on the Vintage list and the imprint publishes a huge variety of fiction and non-fiction. Over the years Vintage has expanded and the list now includes both great authors of the past — who are published under the Vintage Classics imprint — as well as many of the most influential authors of the present.
