Born in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, before being elected to the House, Ratansi worked as a management consultant and a certified general accountant.

During the 39th parliament, Yasmin Ratansi was elected the chair of the standing committee on the status of Women. Furthermore, she was elected vice-chair of the standing committee on laison. Prior to this she served as the Official Opposition's Critic for National Revenue. Upon the election of Stéphane Dion as the leader of the Liberal party, she was given the responsibility of becoming a member of the opposition committee, "Canada and the World".
Yasmin Ratansi was re-elected in the Federal election of 14 October 2008, with 18105 votes, which was 46.93% of the popular vote in the riding.
